Carswell's pursuit of violating civil rights, as well as directly defying the government were challenged by Betty Friedan, who saw them as sexist and backwards and directly opposed the appointment of Carswell as a Supreme Court Justice. These courageous actions preserved the rights women fought so hard to receive.
