Confederate commanders into drawing the soldiers into the open, and as the soldiers begins to march across, the fire starts again, and men die in droves, until all are gone. After the Southern forces retreat, Lee comes to Longstreet and admits that Longstreet was right all along. He then gives orders for the Confederate retreat to Maryland. The novel closes as Chamberlain talks about the Confederate’s bravery, and the next day is Independence Day.
