Auditory Agnosia
Imagine living in the United States your whole life, then being uprooted to a foreign country, where nobody speaks English. Now imagine that there is no way to learn this country’s language. Thus, never being able to understand what is being said. This actually happens to people, without ever having to move to another country. These individuals suffer from what is known as a central auditory processing disorder.

Auditory agnosia can result from metabolic disorders, trauma, tumors, infection, stroke, dementia, or other neurological disorders. Individuals, who suffer from auditory agnosia, may retain their cognitive abilities in other areas. These types of disorders, central auditory processing disorders, can compromise the quality of life. But, if diagnosed early, the patient and their family can get the help they need to overcome some of the barriers caused by auditory agnoisa.
