"The Lesson" is a very poignant story. I believe that the most important idea that the author is trying to convey was the fact that money was not an issue for Sylvia. Sylvia is a little girl that has a lot of pride. She doesn't really understand how poor she is. She thought that white people were crazy and that they like to show off. She continues to feel that white people are crazy and frivolous, wasting so much money on unessential items. She will also continue to rebuff Miss Moore's lessons because she does not believe that she needs anything more in life than swimming or going to the movies.
