Fedoysa is a woman who in her younger years was a governess, like Mashenka. She only attained her status after marrying Nikoli. To some degree, Fedosya is threatened by Mashenka. Mashenka represents Fedoysa’s roots. She is a blaring reminder that her social status was attained and not born into. Because of this, Fedoysa is very insecure in her position. This is why she orders everyone around, including her husband.
