Good evening.
I’m delighted to be here, and I was certainly flattered when Noel
asked me to deliver this inaugural lecture in the Mary Belknap series
– partly because of my admiration for the FPA, but especially
because of my respect and affection for my friend Mary Belknap.

what seems to me to have been a progressive erosion of the culture
of responsibility that earlier generations grew accustomed to, and that
carried us to our president prominence. Fortunately, we have
organizations like the FPA that are trying to reverse that, and to lift
the American public back toward a recognition of what leadership
requires and the future demands. So, for that, I thank you, deeply,
each and every one.
