California's vineyards are facing a very big threat. The combination of a plant disease with no cure and a half-inch-long grasshopper looking thing called a glassy-winged sharpshooter has done millions of dollars of damage in just a few years. Pierces disease has existed for more than 100 years in the state, but until recently there was no carrier as effective in transmitting the disease more than a few feet and spreading it so rapidly. They need to find or invent a pesticide that specifically attacks this insect. These insects seem to be traveling up through California and if we don’t do something about this they may travel to other states or maybe even countries and do maybe even more damage there.
