After she burnt the manuscript she learns to her surprise that Eilert dies a gruesome death, which upsets her greatly. She thought he might have killed himself but he was shot trying to get back his book from a woman who he thought took it. After she heard this sad news from the judge, she slips away to a back room and shoots herself, committing suicide and ending the story.
