Into her needlework she stitches a registry whom are condemned to die. The knitting constitutes a symbol in itself, representing the cold-blooded vengefulness of the revolutionaries. Dickens’ knitting imagery also emphasizes a similarity between vengefulness and fate. Madame Defarge’s knitting becomes a symbol of her victims’ fate- death at the hands of peasantry.
